Your Dishwasher Is Slowly Turning to Stone

The appliance problem nobody can see

There's a repair issue we run into all over Central Oregon that almost nobody knows is happening: inside your dishwasher — and your washer, and your ice maker — a thin mineral crust is slowly building up. Like plaque on a tooth, but for plumbing.

No noise, no warning light, no drama. Just a machine quietly working a little harder every month.

Meet limescale

Our water carries dissolved minerals — mostly calcium and lime. Every time an appliance heats that water, a little bit gets left behind as a hard white coating. Cycle after cycle it builds on the heating element, inside the spray-arm nozzles, around the tiny inlet valves. The appliance doesn't complain — it just runs a little longer, cleans a little worse, sips a little more power, until one day it doesn't.

How hard is our water, really?

Honest answer: Bend's city water is fairly kind — moderately mineralized, nothing dramatic. But head toward the edges of the map — pockets of Redmond, Tumalo, La Pine, anywhere on a well — and it climbs fast. Here's the free test: look at your faucets. If there's a white crust around the spout or a chalky ring on the aerator, that same crust is forming inside every machine the water touches.

When the crust has already won a few rounds

If it's gone too far — a cooked heating element, a choked valve, a dishwasher that's been "running long" for a year — that's a fixable problem, and honestly a satisfying one to solve. We clear the scale, replace what the minerals took out, and show you how to keep it from coming back.

Slow, silent, fixable — like most appliance problems. Now you know where to look.
